5 Reasons Your Furnace Is Blowing Cold Air — and What to Do About It

Few things are more frustrating in the middle of an Ontario winter than feeling cold air coming from your vents when your furnace should be heating your home. While it might seem like a major breakdown, the cause is often simple — and fixable.

Before you bundle up and panic, here are five common reasons your furnace might be blowing cold air — and how to know when it’s time to call Air Source Home Comfort for professional help.

Start with the simplest solution

Make sure your thermostat is set to “heat” and the fan is set to “auto,” not “on.” When the fan is set to “on,” it will continuously blow air — even when the furnace isn’t heating — which can feel like cold air coming from your vents.

If you recently replaced or reset your thermostat, check the programming and mode settings to ensure it’s communicating correctly with your furnace.

A dirty filter can overheat your system

Restricted airflow from a clogged filter can cause your furnace to overheat, triggering a safety shutdown that stops the burners but leaves the fan running. This means you’ll feel air coming through the vents, but it won’t be warm.

Inspect your furnace filter and replace it if it looks dusty or dark. Regular replacements — every one to three months during winter — help maintain proper airflow and prevent unnecessary shutdowns.

No flame means no heat

If you have an older furnace with a pilot light, it may have gone out. Newer systems use electronic ignition sensors that can also fail or become dirty over time.

Check for a steady blue flame — if it’s out or flickering, don’t attempt to relight it yourself unless you’re experienced. Call Air Source Home Comfort to safely inspect and relight or repair your ignition system.

A small sensor with a big job

The flame sensor detects whether your furnace’s burner is lit. If it’s dirty or malfunctioning, it will shut off the gas supply to prevent unburned fuel from entering your home — leaving only cool air blowing from your vents.

This is a common issue in furnaces that haven’t been cleaned recently. A professional tune-up includes cleaning the flame sensor and checking ignition performance to prevent future shutdowns.

Warm air might be escaping before it reaches you

If only certain rooms are receiving cold air, you may have leaks or disconnected joints in your ductwork. Heated air escapes before it reaches your vents, making your system work harder for less comfort.

Sealing and insulating ducts not only restores even heating but also improves efficiency and indoor air quality throughout your home.
